Abstract

The journalistic tradition in Swat began in 1986 with the publication of Sada-e Swat under the leadership of Mian Syed Umar Naseh, marking the inception of print media in the region. Over time, numerous newspapers emerged, addressing national and regional issues, historical and religious topics, as well as literary and practical subjects. These newspapers not only highlighted local concerns but also played a vital role in promoting Urdu language and literature, especially in areas with limited access to electronic media. Prominent newspapers such as Roznama Swat, Roznama Shumal, Roznama Azadi, Sada-e-Malakand, Roznama Chand, Roznama Khabarkar, Awaz-e-Swat, and Swat Times contributed significantly to the literary and cultural development of the region. They provided a platform for writers, poets, and intellectuals, encouraged literary creativity, and fostered public awareness. Despite the challenges of limited resources and the absence of modern publishing infrastructure, these newspapers and literary journals have maintained the cultural and intellectual vitality of Swat. This study presents an overview of these publications, highlighting their historical emergence, contributions to Urdu language and literature, and their role in nurturing the region’s academic, literary, and socio-political consciousness.
