This paper explores Safarnama (travelogue) in Urdu literature, highlighting its significance as a medium for recording observations, experiences, and literary expression. The term Safarnama combines the Arabic word Safar (journey) and the Persian word Nama (written account), encompassing travel narratives that document a traveler’s experiences, impressions, and encounters. Historically, travelogues have served as important sources of geographical, historical, and cultural knowledge, especially when mobility was limited and information about distant lands was scarce. In addition to factual reporting, Urdu Safarnama reflects social customs, religious practices, and the personal insights of the traveler, offering readers both informative and aesthetic pleasure. This paper examines the essential features of travelogues, including curiosity, attention to detail, selection of events, the interplay of external observations and internal reflections, and the role of style in engaging readers. Furthermore, it classifies Urdu travelogues into groups based on geography, theme, and literary style, discussing notable examples ranging from early descriptive accounts to humorous and poetic narratives. The study concludes that Safarnama in Urdu literature is not merely a record of journeys but a distinct literary genre that blends observation, personal experience, and creative expression, enriching readers’ understanding of diverse cultures and human experiences.
